First Aid for Halloween
First Aid is good but as we always say “Prevention is better than cure!”
So this week I thought I’d offer some general first aid advice that hopefully won’t spoil the fun:-
- Check costumes aren’t likely to be tripped on
- Check everyone can see where they’re going through masks or remove them when walking
- Watch those lollies! – They can be a choking risk and the sticks can cause mouth injuries if you fall onto them whilst they’re in the mouth
- Take a torch so you can see hazards on the ground
- Know your first aid for trips and grazes in case you need it
- I know too that my Fire Trainer colleagues would want me to mention to take care with candles
First aid for trips and grazes
For minor sprains and strains then simple ‘over the counter’ type painkillers that you’d normally use are good. So are ice packs, rest and elevation of the injured part.
For minor grazes a good thing to do is to make sure that they’re clean. A good way to do this with children can be to have a bath and gently wash the affected part in the water. Just use plain water though not with bubble bath or anything else in the water. Once it’s clean you can decide if you need to seek advice from your local Walk-in centre, Minor Injuries Unit or Emergency Department.
Please get in touch if you have any other tips and have fun!
