Think about your heart and learn First Aid for Valentine’s Day

Next Saturday will be Valentine’s Day when we think about the loved ones in our lives.  No-one wants to think about anything happening to our loved ones but if it did would you know what to do?  Have you considered learning first aid for Valentines Day?

Last October saw the 2nd European Restart a Heart Day of which the focus was that ‘Loved ones can save lives’.  The Resuscitation Council (UK) quoted on their website that:-

“60,000 people suffer cardiac arrests in the UK every year and the majority of them do so at home with over 50% witnessed by loved ones (including children). Bystander CPR is low – only 1 in 3 have any CPR before an ambulance arrives and on average less than 12% survive. CPR before the ambulance arrives doubles chances of survival therefore it is vital that bystanders know what to do in an emergency.”

The best way to learn CPR is to attend a course where you can have face to face training and the opportunity to practise on manikins.  I provide courses for health professionals, businesses or not-for-profit groups.  If you’d like to discuss a course please contact me.

There are other useful tools available too such as the Lifesaver interactive video, there are 3 videos for CPR/AED, the recovery position and choking.  There are also short films on youtube from the British Heart Foundation that demonstrate what to do in an emergency.  So if you really don’t want to attend a course watch the videos and practise on your cushion.  Courses are not scary though and I think the idea of not knowing what to do is much scarier.  Your trainer should work hard to ensure everyone feels comfortable and able to learn so if you’re apprehensive contact them beforehand or speak to them on the day before you start.
