Do you know CPR? Pass it on

Last year I attended a workshop on blogging.  The presenter, Liam, said that his aim is to ‘be helpful’ and that’s mine too.  When I teach I try to pass on some of my skills and knowledge not just to help my learners pass the assessment or tick their CPD box but so that they might feel more confident if they have to put their skills into action.  Would you know what to do in an emergency? Would your team?

I predominantly teach health professionals and because their training is mandatory there are certain topics that have to be included. We discuss various medical emergencies and how to recognise them and what to do. I encourage them to share their knowledge and CPR skills with their friends and family and recommend the Lifesaver interactive video which is a great tool and is great for children too.  Schools can in fact get their own copy and can get packs from the British Heart Foundation as part of their ‘Call, Push, Rescue‘ campaign to help them teach CPR in schools.

There’s also videos available on YouTube from the British Heart Foundation, there’s how to put someone in the recovery position, there’s the new advert from the St John’s about ‘The Chokeables‘ which shows what to do with a choking baby; what’s missing from this advert is that whilst waiting for your help if the baby becomes unconscious then start CPR.

Occasionally I get learners who are worried that they must do everything correctly but I encourage them to have the confidence to put their skills to use.  I’m happy to say that I regularly get comments from my learners that they feel more confident.

Would you know what to do?  Would you like to learn?

I run on-site courses for health professionals but I also run not-for-profit classes for charitable or not-for-profit groups.
